An Evening with Mark Segal

12 July 2022 6:30pm–11:30pm

UNISON Centre, London

UNISON is delighted to host an evening with pioneering gay rights activist Mark Segal as he tells us of his incredible experiences campaigning for the LGBT+ community.

Mark was one of the original Stonewall protesters back in 1969, and in the aftermath of the riots founded the Gay Liberation Front to continue the fight for LGBT+ equality. The GLF organised the first-ever Gay Pride march and a series of landmark protests against homophobia within the press. As a socialist-led organisation, the GLF also supported the wider struggle for civil rights, backing anti-colonial movements and the Black Panthers. In 1976 Mark established the Philadelphia Gay News – the oldest US newspaper of its type – but is perhaps best known for his 1973 invasion of the CBS Evening News studio, where he ran in front of host Walter Cronkite during a live broadcast and held a sign up to the camera reading, ‘Gays Protest CBS Prejudice’.

In recent years Mark has worked with Barack Obama’s administration to create America’s first-ever retirement homes exclusively for LGBT+ people and served as president of the National Gay Newspaper Guild. His best-selling memoir ‘And Then I Danced: Traveling the Road to LGBT Equality’ was released to critical acclaim in 2015 and named Book of the Year by the National Lesbian & Gay Journalist Association.

Mark’s contribution to the freedoms we enjoy today cannot be overstated. Our union, in partnership with Medway Pride Radio, is immensely proud to be a part of his first-ever UK speaking tour.

The event will be held at UNISON Centre in London on Tuesday 12th July 2022.

The evening will start with a drinks reception at 18:30, and we would be delighted if you and a guest would be able to join us.

Do not miss this fantastic opportunity to hear from one of the LGBT+ community’s most legendary figures!

To attend, please register with your name and the name of your guest by Friday 25th June.
