Responding to the announcement that East Sussex County Council has asked ministers for financial support to cover a likely budget deficit in 2026-27, UNISON South East local government lead Kieran Pearson said:
“East Sussex’s warning that it does not have the reserves to cover a predicted £56 million shortfall is deeply concerning. Applying for the government’s exceptional financial support scheme is effectively bankruptcy in all but name.
“Years of underfunding have left councils struggling to maintain vital services while protecting jobs. Council staff are working tirelessly to support their communities but goodwill cannot replace proper funding and now the coffers are empty.
“The government must provide a meaningful funding increase for all local authorities and multi-year financial settlements so that they can continue delivering essential services, keep jobs and protect vulnerable residents.
“With local government reorganisation in Sussex imminent, it is also critical that councils are resourced now to ensure a smooth transition to new structures.”
