Commenting on the unveiling of new unitary authorities for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight and the decision to delay proposals for Sussex today (Wednesday), UNISON South East regional secretary Jo Galloway said:
“This is a significant decision that will shape local government in the South East for decades to come. It’s sensible ministers don’t rush a decision for Sussex.
“However, the workforce and residents will need clarity sooner rather than later to ensure a fair transition to the new authorities.
“Reorganisation must not come at the expense of staff working conditions or wellbeing.
“There should be no compulsory redundancies or erosion of rights and benefits.
“Transitional funding is welcome but central government should cover the full cost of reorganisation to protect services and staff.
“Without employee input, there’s a real risk this major overhaul could lead to further cuts, unnecessary disruption and poorer outcomes.
“Proper discussions with the workforce and their unions, as well as a focus on protecting services, are essential. That’s the way to build new authorities that deliver for employees and the public.”
