How long have you been a member of UNISON?
“I’ve been a member for 13 years.”

How long have you been a steward?
“About 5 years.”

Why did you become a steward? What made you take this step?
“I had a bad experience at work after coming back from long term sick leave and didn’t have any support. My job had been downgraded while I was off sick and I was underutilised and wanted to use and develop my skills. Becoming a steward helped me remain engaged at work.”

What’s the best thing about being a UNISON steward?
“I enjoy getting involved, finding out what is going on and gaining an understanding of the politics and policies that affect the health service in particular but also public services in general.”

What would you say to someone who is thinking about becoming a steward?
“I would say ‘Do it. Definitely do it’. It is great for building your confidence, you become more assertive and get a broader understanding of your workplace. You see the big picture rather than just your job. You get to help others and make your workplace better. ”
