The University of Brighton has signed up to UNISON’s anti-racism charter promising to promote a diverse workforce and tackle racism.
University of Brighton vice-chancellor Professor Donna Whitehead said: “We are proud to be the first university in the South East to sign UNISON’s anti-racism charter.
“This is an important milestone in our ongoing work to create an environment where every member of our community feels valued, respected and supported.
“Our commitment goes beyond words – we will continue to take meaningful action to challenge racism and embed equity and inclusion in everything we do.”
Eve Taylor-Mungai, UNISON branch co-Black members officer at the University of Brighton said: “We look forward to seeing the positive and meaningful changes in the University of Brighton as a result of the anti-racist charter. This is the beginning of Brighton showing its commitment to equity and diversity.”
UNISON South East regional secretary Jo Galloway said: “Unions and universities have crucial roles to play in combatting the politics of hate.
“The charter is a powerful way for leaders to work with staff and ensure racism has no place in higher education.
“By signing UNISON’s anti-racism charter, the University of Brighton is making a powerful statement about how employers should value all their staff. We hope more institutions will follow their positive example.”
