Happy Diwali from UNISON South East

Sunday 12 November 2024 is Diwali, a festival celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs and followers of Jainism throughout the world, including here in the South East.

For Hindus, Diwali symbolizes the return of Prince Rama of Ayodhya, his wife Sita, and his brother Lakshman, from exile and a war in which Prince Rama stood victorious. It’s a celebration of light over darkness, of good winning out in the end – something we can all take heart from as trade unionists.

For Sikhs, the celebration marks the victory of the Guru Hargobind who had imprisoned with 52 others. Guru Hargobind refused to leave the prison until he was able to bring everyone else with him – a lesson in solidarity.

Bill Acharjee, UNISON South East Regional Black Members Officer, says:

“As a British Hindu, I recall my late parents celebrating Diwali by placing candles and diva lamps throughout our house and when I asked why we did that they would explain to protect us and scare away evil spirits, and still to this day each year I do the same in my own home.

If you are a Hindu or not, I encourage you all to light a candle or diva lamp in your homes on the 12 November to show your solidarity and acknowledge the evil conflicts happening around the world today.

I wish all my Hindu and non-Hindu brothers and sisters a very safe, happy and peaceful Diwali!”
