Nursing the nation today and every day

International Nurses Day is celebrated every year across the whole nursing family. But why today?

May 12 is the birth date of the most famous nurse, Florence Nightingale, and 2020 marks 200 years since she was born.

Today, UNISON, the biggest union in healthcare, represents the whole nursing family, including registered nurses, midwives, healthcare assistants, community nurses, nursing associates, apprentices and healthcare students.

The nursing family are of course, at the frontline in the Covid-19 pandemic. But what is it like on the frontline? Stuart Tuckwood is UNISON’s National Nursing Officer. He has returned to work on the wards, and is keeping a weekly video diary. You can watch it here.

Nurses, you spend your working lives caring for others. We are committed to standing up for you and making sure you are always properly valued, respected, and supported to give the best care.

Thank you, on International Nurses Day, and every day.
