UNISON South East Launches Year of LGBT+ Workers!

On Saturday 24 February 2024, UNISON South East held a launch event to celebrate the Year of LGBT+ Workers at UNISON Centre. The day began with Bev Miller, UNISON National Black Committee member, delivering a quiz on Black LGBT+ history. Lucy Power, Regional and National LGBT+ Committee member, and Mitch Coe, UNISON National Officer, highlighted what branches and members can do throughout the year to make it a success.

After lunch there was a captivating performance by Dr. Clare Summerskill. Clare performed ‘In Our Own Words’: first-hand accounts of exciting and turbulent events in LGBT+ history. It was thought-provoking and moving, inspiring great discussions and ideas in the afternoon workshops that followed. As groups, we covered questions including ‘what does the Year of LGBT+ Workers mean to me’ and ‘how can I make my workplace more LGBT+ Inclusive?’

We finished the day with a tour around the Queer Britain, the UK’s first and only LGBT+ museum.

We can’t wait to hear about and see the work that you will be doing in your branches this year to promote the Year of LGBT+ workers.
