National Young Members’ Weekend

When: 3 – 5 December 2021
Where: Cardiff

As this is the first conference for young members, it’s a really exciting opportunity for you to have your say on the important issues facing you and your colleagues in the workplace and to meet other young members from across the country.

We are holding a short half an hour meeting to cover some urgent matters relating to the National Young Members’ Weekend (NYMW).

For the first time, you have the opportunity to contribute your ideas towards submitting a motion to the conference about what’s important to you at work. It’s a chance to have your say and decide what the union does and how it tackles the issues you’re facing.

All young members are invited to attend this meeting to share their ideas.

What is a motion?

A motion is a formal proposal put to a decision making body e.g. this year, a motion was submitted by the National Young Members’ Forum to Special Delegate Conference titled; ‘Burned Out: Young Workers and Mentally Healthy Workplaces’.

This was carried, which means the National Executive Council (the highest governing body of UNISON) are working towards implementing the the objectives set out in the motion. You can read more about this here.

This is an example of how UNISON young members have impacted UNISON policy. Have your say too!

Standing Orders Committee

Another important part of the first young members conference is the standing orders committee. It is made up of one young member from each UNISON region – we are therefore able to send one member on behalf of the South East.

The committee decide how the conference is run, including who the guest speakers are and decide which motions are most relevant to young members. The group are an essential part of the weekend, the conference can’t run without them.

If you think you might be interested in this role, please contact us by emailing Emily or Rosie (Regional Young Members’ Leads) at e.neave1@unison.co.uk and r.sammut@unison.co.uk

If you are interested in attending the NYMW this year, please come along to this short meeting.

We look forward to seeing you!
