Get involved with activities and events to celebrate Black History Month 2023

Black History Month UNISON logo

October is Black History Month and there are a number of UNISON run events happening in the South East and beyond designed to educate and inspire members.

Getting informed about the issues, finding out more about Black history, and understanding how we all have a part to pay in fighting injustice means these are open to all UNISON members.


Challenging the hostile environment
10 October / 1pm-2pm

From Windrush to the workplace we will be talking about UNISON’s campaign to defend migrant workers, refugees and Black communities. This is an online event with UNISON policy officer Narmada Thiranagama taking place on Microsoft Teams.

UNISON North & West Surrey Branch Black History Month Event
18 October 2023 / 12pm–2pm

A special lunchtime event to celebrate Black History Month and the birthday of the NHS, with a free lunch, guest speakers and the chance to find out more about coming a union rep.

Beyond the anniversaries – legacies, lessons and achievements
20 October 2023 / 11am–4:45pm

Supporting Wear Red Day by Show Racism the Red Card, the event will be vibrant and challenging, consisting of speakers, music, and spoken word on various topics, acknowledging the past, present and future. We will reflect on the 75th anniversary of Windrush, the 75th anniversary of the NHS, the 30th anniversary of the murder of Stephen Lawrence and the 30th anniversary of UNISON, representing Black self-organisation.

Engaging with Black women – from activists to leadership

The National Women’s Committee (NWC) has organised a webinar on how to increase the participation of Black women in UNISON and how to progress from being a member to an activist and subsequently to leadership.

Saluting Our Sisters: A Black History Month Event
28 October 2023 / 2pm–6pm

UNISON Oxfordshire Health Services branch host a special Black History Month event with talks from distinguished guest speakers, including Labour councillor Jabu Nala-Hartley speaking about her mother’s role as a prominent trade union leader combating South African Apartheid, and Darius Smith sharing insights in his presentation My Journey.

UNISON Party Night
25 November 2023 / 8pm-midnight

To celebrate 2023 Year of Black Workers, our Oxfordshire Health and Oxford City branches have organised a party night at the Cowley Workers Social Club in Oxford. The event includes a sit down meal and live music from Sir Sambo Sound.
