All together for Equality!

South East members back in action for the Regional Equality Conference

After 2 years of Covid disruption, it was great to see activists come together again at UNISON Centre for the SE Equality Conference earlier this month. Attracting new and more experienced activists, it was an opportunity to network with other branches and find solutions to a number of equality issues in branches.

The day was opened by Rosita Ellis, Regional Convenor, followed by a workshop from Beth Bickerstaffe, where activists views were sought on increasing participation from under-represented groups in the union.

Workshops focussed on equality pay gaps, and using employer’s equality data to challenge bias at work. The day finished with a panel discussion on UNISON’s Year of Disabled Workers, featuring Carola Towle, UNISON’s Head of Equality, Sarah Barwick, chair of the SE Disabled Members committee, and Guy Chaudoir, National Programme Manager for Scope, the leading disability charity.

Delegates heard of the key campaign objectives for the year of Disabled Workers, and learned more from UNISON and Scope about the Disability Employment Charter, which UNISON is founding partner of.  The panel was opened with a video message from Anneliese Dodds, Labour MP for Oxford East and Shadow Secretary of State for Women & Equalities. Activists were present at the launch of the region’s Disability Toolkit, and the updated Equality Calendar.

Delegates returned to their branches inspired and enthused to carry forward campaign and bargaining work in their workplaces.
